New York theater audiences will get wined and dined this spring, as a unique theatrical production based on Rex Pickett's novel Sideways arrives off-Broadway. Dan Wackerman will direct the play, titled Sideways The Experience, set to run from February 20 through April 12 at the Theatre at St. Clement's.
Adapted by Pickett and billed as an immersive wine and food event, Sideways The Experience follows the story of the novel (which was adapted into a 2004 Oscar-winning film), with audiences being served libations and appetizers throughout the show. Sideways centers on two middle-aged men, Miles and Jack, as they embark on a weeklong road trip through California's wine country just as one is about to get married.
The cast of Sideways The Experience will be led by Gil Brady (Shear Madness) as Jack and Brian Ray Norris (SpongeBob SquarePants) as Miles, with Kimberly Doreen Burns as Maya, Allison Briner Dardenne as Phyllis, Stephen Elrod as Brad, Jenny Latimer as Victoria, Jenny Strassburg as Terra and Oliver Wadsworth as the Tasting Room Manager.
The production will feature scenic design by David Arsenault, costume design by Nicole Wee, lighting design by Jimmy Lawlor and sound design by Quentin Chiappetta.
This mounting of Sideways follows a world premiere staging of the play, staged traditionally, at La Jolla Playhouse in 2013. A musical adaptation, featuring an original score by Anthony Adams, is currently in development, with a regional production expected to arrive on stage in the spring/summer of 2020.
